DC SCORES Summer Camp Goes Out With A Bang

Poet-athletes celebrated the last day of summer camp with a jam-packed day of learning and fun, thanks to support from the Devin & Lauren Talbott Family Fund.

DC SCORES Summer Camp Goes Out With A Bang

Elementary schoolers participating in DC SCORES summer camp closed out a month of soccer, poetry, arts, and science programming with an extravagant, fun-filled celebration.

More than 80 public school students enrolled in DC SCORES summer camp, which ran throughout July and was fully funded by the Devin & Lauren Talbott Family Fund.

Camp culminated on August 1 with a day of activities that included a video game truck, yard games, tie-dye stations, and staff-versus-campers soccer matches.

The camp curriculum, which ran from 9am until 3pm every weekday, combined DC SCORES’ key programming pillars of soccer, poetry, and service-learning with activities focused on DC history and science. Camp was hosted at DC SCORES partner school, LaSalle-Backsus Elementary.

USWNT and Arsenal Star Emily Fox joined campers for two days of activities.

Highlights from camp included a visit from the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), in partnership with the Soccer Forward Foundation; two days of activities with USWNT and Arsenal star Emily Fox, poetry sessions led by leading DMV spoken word artists, and field trips to a local farm and the The National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Thanks to a generous gift from the Devin & Lauren Talbott Family Fund, this year’s camp was the largest DC SCORES has ever offered, serving more poet-athletes than in previous years and extending programming to last the equivalent of a full school day.

Devin Talbott is a DC SCORES Board Member and Founder and CEO of Enlightenment Capital. His family made the gift in memory of his mother, Brooke Shearer, an investigative reporter, nonprofit leader, and devoted soccer mom who supported numerous good causes in the DMV and around the world.

Talbott’s teenage children, Rosalie and Teddy, also volunteered at camp as counselors.

In addition to soccer, poetry, and service learning, the camp curriculum included the arts, sciences, and DC history.

“We are so grateful to the Talbott family for ensuring that this year’s camp could serve as many poet-athletes as possible,” said Tony Francavilla, Chief Development Officer. “Campers had unparalleled opportunities to build community, develop new passions, and have fun, and we can’t wait to see how they carry their skills into our regular season programming!”

“Summer camp made me feel happy, especially when we got to play around with the coaches,” said Keshawn, a rising fourth grader from LaSalle-Backus Elementary who attended the camp. “I made so many friends at camp who were friendly and kind. I hope I can come back next summer and it’s just the same.”
