2026 Poet-Athlete Award Winner
Briana Scurry
DC SCORES is honored to present the 2026 Poet-Athlete Award to Bri Scurry for her extraordinary leadership in the world of soccer and her commitment to empowering the next generation.
The Poet-Athlete Award is bestowed upon individuals who embody the ethos of DC SCORES poet-athletes by using their voices to serve as leaders in their communities and speak up against injustice. As the longtime starting goalkeeper for the U.S. Women’s National Team, Scurry helped shape one of the most transformative eras in women’s sports. Her decisive penalty kick save in the championship final of the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup secured victory for the United States and became one of the most iconic moments in the history of the game, inspiring millions of young athletes.
Beyond her accomplishments on the field, Scurry has used her platform to advocate for equity, representation, and athlete wellbeing. In 2017, she became the first Black woman inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, recognizing both her groundbreaking career and her role as a trailblazer for future generations.
Through her continued presence with the Washington Spirit she has championed the growth of the women's game in the region and its investment in the next generation. In 2014, she also served as an ambassador for the SCORES Network, formerly America SCORES, supporting our mission to empower young people through soccer, poetry, and service-learning.
As the United States prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, honoring Scurry celebrates both the legacy of women who helped elevate the sport and the next generation of leaders inspired by their example.
