The event will feature original spoken-word performances from DC SCORES Poet-Athletes participating in the Youth WORD Initiative, an enhanced writing program for students passionate about poetry and performance. Poet-Athletes will be joined on stage by the top spoken word artists in the DMV.

The evening's program also includes the presentation of the Poet-Athlete Award, which is bestowed annually on an individual, or group of individual, who embodies the ethos of the Poet-Athlete. Learn more about our 2025 Poet-Athlete Award winner below!

Our Words Our City will begin at 6pm with a pre-event reception. The reception is first come first served, so arrive early to enjoy drinks and hors d'oeuvres and mingle with members of D.C.'s poetry and soccer communities!

2025 Poet-Athlete Award Winner

Tori Huster

In 2025, DC SCORES was honored to present the Poet-Athlete Award to Tori Huster for her leadership at the National Women's Soccer League Players Association (NWSLPA) and her contributions to DC SCORES as a Washington Spirit player.

The Poet-Athlete Award is bestowed upon individuals who embody the ethos of DC SCORES poet-athletes by using their voices to serve as leaders in their communities and speak up against injustice. As president of the NWSLPA, Huster played a pivotal role in negotiating the union's historic collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in 2022 and the subsequent landmark 2024 CBA, which secured free agency rights and abolished the draft — making the NWSL the first major American professional sport to achieve these groundbreaking milestones.

As deputy executive director of the NWSLPA, Huster continues to champion players’ rights, equitable treatment, and enhanced working conditions, with a particular emphasis on player health, wellness, and safety. In addition to her work in labor rights, Huster has been a visible advocate for DC SCORES. As the most-tenured player in Washington Spirit history, with over 150 appearances, she was a steadfast supporter of the nonprofit’s mission. Through the Spirit’s Official Community Partnership with DC SCORES, she actively championed its programming, which serves more than 3,500 youth through soccer, poetry, and service learning.
